Manzanar, Californie, 2018

En 1942, suite à l'attaque de Pearl Harbor, une dizaine de camps d'internement pour civils Nippo-Américains (2/3 étant Américains de naissance) furent mis en place par Franklin Roosevelt enfermant quelques 120 000 prisonniers, forcés d'abandonner maisons et affaires. Tous les lieux choisis dans des régions arides.
Manzanar fut un de ces camps comprenant 11 000 prisonniers dans des conditions climatiques pénibles (vents extrêmes, 43° en moyenne). Situé en Californie, au pied de la Sierra Nevada, près de La Vallée de la Mort. 
Le mieux conservé des anciens camps, Manzanar comptait 36 baraquements contenant 300 personnes chacun.
Ils furent libérés en 1945, fermés en 1946, et la reconnaissance du préjudice en 1988.

In 1942, following the attack of Pearl Harbor, some ten internment camps for Japanese American civilians (2/3 being American born) were built under the Franklin Roosevelt government gathering some 120 000 prisoners, forced to give up their homes and businesses. All sites were chosen in arid regions.
Manzanar was one of them containing 11 000 prisoners in hard climatic conditions (high winds, and an average temperature of 109°). Situated in California at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, near Death Valley.
The best preserved of all camps, Manzanar comprised 36 buildings holding 300 persons each.
They were liberated in 1945, closed in 1946, and acknowledgement of the prejudice in 1988.
